Stories of the Past

Please share your stories of things you remember from your years of the past. Many of the ways things use to be done or items from the past have been all but forgotten. Help us preserve some of that experience for generations to come.

Tending the Fields

Back in the late 1930's or early 1940's, we had a cotton field. Well, the rain water would just wash right over that field taking the seeds with it. We called the County Extension Agent to come out and have a look.

He surveyed the area and said we needed some stone terracing to stop the water. He proceeded to mark them off one at a time. Well, all we had to build up the berms was a mule and a plow. I guided the mule down both sides of the berm building it up. Then came the hard part of covering it with rocks.

Once we completed the task, we planted our cotton seed and when the rain water washed down the hill, it was halted by our new terraces and the cotton grew tall! That was some hard work but in the end, it was worth it.
